Changes to EPIRB Laws for Domestic Commercial Vessels

Since the 1st of January 2021, float-free Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) have been mandatory on all fishing, passenger and non-passenger vessels that are:

1. 12 or more metres in length and operate beyond 2 nautical miles seaward from land

2. Less than 12 metres in length operating in restricted offshore and offshore waters (B or C waters) and do not have level flotation, and

3. All hire and drive vessels operating in restricted offshore waters (Class 4C) 12 or more metres in length, or less than 12 metres and do not have level flotation.

4. For vessels less than 7.5 metres without level flotation, instead of a float-free EPIRB, you may
choose a GPS EPIRB with manual bracket, if everyone on board wears a lifejacket.

The change in safety requirements was introduced to save lives and prevent further tragedies where vessels have sunk too quickly for the EPIRB to be manually activated.
